√2 - Causeway
Root 2 uses concrete and rusted iron to contrast structure, permanence, and decay. The form draws from the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway and follows a simple mathematical sequence. Three columns, each 20 centimeters wide, follow a Square Root of 2 sequence by dividing by √2 each step. 20 ÷ √2 = 14.14. 14.14 ÷ √2 = 10. If continued, the sequence keeps reducing toward zero, so the same logic that creates order also implies eventual disappearance. Concrete and iron carry the visual language of strength, stability, and endurance, creating the expectation of something solid and lasting. Yet their surfaces tell a different story. Concrete records its making through seams, pits, and marks, while rust introduces weathering and vulnerability. The work brings together mathematical order and entropy, showing how even forms built from the symbols of permanence remain subject to time.
